About South African Education

Overview of the South African Education System

The South African education system consists of three levels:

  1. General Education and Training (GET): Grades R-9 (Ages 5-15)
  2. Further Education and Training (FET): Grades 10-12 (Ages 16-18)
  3. Higher Education and Training (HET): Universities and TVET Colleges

Curriculum Framework

South Africa follows the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), which provides clear expectations of what learners should know, be able to do, and understand at each grade level.

Languages in South African Schools

South African schools offer education in the official languages of South Africa. The Language in Education and Training Policy allows for mother-tongue education in the early years, with English becoming increasingly important as the language of learning and teaching in higher grades.

The 11 official languages are: Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, English, Northern Sotho, Tswana, Sotho, Tsonga, Swazi, Venda, and Ndebele.
